Ever since I received my first blender as a birthday gift several years ago, I’ve been experimenting with smoothies on a nearly daily basis—indeed, you might call me a “smoothie enthusiast.” A key aspect of all my smoothies is that they must be nutritious. Accordingly, peanut butter makes a perfect smoothie component, with its high protein content and generous amounts of fiber and heart-healthy unsaturated fats. Below, you’ll find a hemp-based smoothie with banana and coconut; this smoothie provides a dose of omega-3 fatty acids, a nutrient often lacking in vegetarian and vegan diets. The second blended concoction featured here includes even more superfoods with strawberries (high in vitamin C) plus flavonoid-rich cocoa powder.

Notes:

– While I prefer unsweetened almond milk, you may substitute any non-dairy milk in this recipe. It would be equally delicious and nutritious with soymilk, rice milk, or hemp milk.

– Ground hemp seed can be found at Whole Foods Markets, or your local health food store. Hemp seed is available in ground and whole form; I prefer pre-ground varieties to ensure the smoothest texture possible in my smoothies.

– I prefer frozen fruit for all my smoothie recipes because of the thicker consistency that it provides. However, you may substitute fresh bananas, but you may need to decrease the amount of milk by about 1/3 cup.

Notes:

– While I enjoy this recipe with unsweetened soymilk, feel free to substitute any other milk you may prefer (e.g., cow’s, almond, rice, hemp, etc.).

– Because both the soymilk and protein powder used in this recipe are unsweetened, I add stevia extract for sweetness. However, if you choose to use a sweetened milk or protein powder, you may omit the stevia extract.

– While this shake tastes delicious without the inclusion of protein powder, it acts as a thickener, creating a milkshake-like texture. The protein also provides extra nutrition and satiety, making it a more complete breakfast.

– I prefer frozen fruit for all my smoothies and shakes because it provides a thicker consistency. However, you may use fresh strawberries for this shake, but you will likely need to decrease the milk measurement by up to 1/2 cup.
