Peanut Butter-Chocolate “Green” Milkshake

Healthy and milkshake belong in the same sentence when you’re talking about this recipe. No one would know it from the rich, creamy texture or the sweet peanut butter-chocolate taste but this milkshake is packed with good-for-you-stuff. Spinach. Avocado. Banana. Dates. Don’t let that stop you from trying this lusciously smooth treat. Instead, get out your blender and whip up a healthy treat. For those of you who are dairy-free, rejoice! This milkshake doesn’t use a drop of milk.

Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 5 minutes
Total time: 10 minutes
Yield: 2-3 servings

For the Topping

2 tablespoons Golden Roasted Peanuts
whipped topping (use dairy-free if needed)

For the Milkshake

1 cup ice cubes
1/2 cup unsweetened coconut milk (from a carton, not canned)
1 large banana, frozen
5 large medjool dates, pitted
1/4 large avocado
6 tablespoons cocoa powder
1/4 cup Old Fashioned Smooth peanut butter
2-3 cups baby spinach, packed (use more spinach if you’re already a green smoothie fan)


Make the Topping

Put the Golden Roasted Peanuts into a sealable plastic bag. Crush with the end of a butter knife or rolling pin until the peanuts are in small pieces. Set aside.

Make the Milkshake

1. Put the ice cubes in the bottom of a high-powered blender. (I used my Vita-Mix.) Pour in the coconut milk, then add the banana, dates, avocado, cocoa powder, and Old Fashioned Smooth peanut butter. Top with the baby spinach.

2. Start on low, and gradually increase to the highest speed. Push the ingredients into the blades with the tamper as needed. Mix just until rich and creamy.

Pour the milkshake into chilled glasses. Top with whipped topping then sprinkle with crushed Golden Roasted Peanuts. Serve immediately.

    I put flax seeds/meal in everything, so certainly they’d go in this too. Blueberries for a twist on a PB&J sandwich sounds fun! Maybe a bit of coffee to enhance the chocolate flavor. I may have this for my post-workout smoothie today!

    This looks delicious! But wouldn’t “whipped topping” contain refined sugar? I do eat refined sugar, but I’m just wondering if there is a type I don’t know about.

      Hi Amelia – You can use whipped coconut cream (the fat off of the top of a refrigerated can of full-fat coconut milk whipped just like regular heavy cream) and sweeten it with stevia, honey, or powdered coconut palm sugar. You can also sweeten regular whipped heavy cream the same way. I used a product called Soyatoo Whipped Rice Milk. It’s sweetened with rice syrup.

    I add instant vanilla pudding, protein powder, and a frozen banana to my greens and peanut butter. It tastes like caramel if your banana is really ripe before you go to freeze it.

      Yep. A great way to get your greens and dessert at the same time. When I make this, I pack in the spinach so mine are really green and not chocolate. But, if I’m serving it to my hubby or friends I go lighter on the spinach so it still looks like a chocolate milkshake.

    I would replace the spinach with mixture of kale and cabbage juice, add some ground flax seeds, and drizzle in a ribbon of strawberry puree.
